What length of blade
The blade size does not necessarily have to be changed (and many samurai thus did not have a saber of an adapted length). While it is customary on an iaïto to do the katas well (draw and sheath), on a shinken (sharp sword), if you do not practice iaido it is not essential.
Indeed, many athletes who practice cutting but not iaido, prefer to keep the "standard" dimension called Josun (28" without habaki) in order to have a lighter and more manageable blade. We recommend changing the size only if you want to practice iaido with your sharp saber (see size chart below).
